Current movies with great sound

Hey guys,

I kind of feel there are not so many new movies released with better than average sound.
Most of them are okay but lack, especially dynamics.
They sound like they were mastered for your TV and soundbar and not for a great home-cinema experience.
Basically all Marvel/Disney movies fall into that category.

What current releases stood out to you?

My last two were:

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2021
A nice and mellow family film with great sound design. A typical Sunday afternoon movie.

Last Night in Soho 2021
A very dynamic soundtrack, sometimes even too dynamic. Nothing for people living in apartments:)
The movie was okay, nothing extraordinary.

Looking forward to your experiences.

I’ve a 1TB of clips to test a system out. My go to clips are:

For Atmos try The Great Wall tunnel scene or skull Island intro.

For bass Impact I like the Baby Driver intro with the bank robbery and car chase.

For sub woofers Oblivion has 3 key scenes in the film.  One when Tom Cruise lands his ship on the footy field.  Sealed sub gives more texture whee ported drops alot lower.

The scene when Toms rope gets cut and he falls theres a bass sweep just like in The hit man’s Body guard when the van blows up.

Third scene is when he wakes from his sleep after a dip in the pool. There’s very low subtle bass notes.

I fell asleep watching Dune so ill try again with that.

Everest was a great all rounder as it has great Atmos especially when the storm Comes along. The swirling snow and ice will give your tweeters a work out as it pans around and over the room. If you have a harsh sounding system this will highlight it.  It has great bass with the thunder too.

Ghostbusters was pretty good too to be honest as is Blade Runner 2049.

Here is an interesting paradox.  Is it the movie soundtrack that is good, or the fact that soundtrack is playing through Arendal speakers that makes it sound good?

I have a very unpopular finding.

I recently watched King Arthur – Legend of the Sword and I was really impressed with the SFX and Music. I believe it is a great movie to try. Visual and different too. I liked it. I hope some of you will like it too.

Not all of them considered “current” release, but these are my favorite from last couple years:

  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Ford v Ferrari
  • Godzilla 2014 (has a dark bridge scene middle-ish which is just amazing)
  • Ready Player One

Nolan movies generally speaking also have amazing sound: Tenet, Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight

I also found Planet Earth II to have very good sound and spectacular image in HDR (in fact, only HDR content so far which I really enjoyed).

Recently the web first releases are kind of let down, unfortunately.

Fifth element, diva…

I found John Wick to be really enjoyable to listen to, most notably John Wicks car and the “club-scene”.

I just received “Spiderman: No Way Home” today and will hopefully get a chance to see it tonight.  Will report back on how it goes.
