1723 Towers/Center THX, Sealed & Ported

I’ve been running an experiment of sorts to make comparisons with running my front stage, which allow for sealed and ported options. From day 1, since i installed and placed my front stage, I’ve been listening to them sealed, all ports plugged and I’ve quite enjoyed the sound thus far, so much so that the difference between my previous Klipsch Legends was quite drastic in my preferences. The Klipsch Legends are no slouch what-so-ever as I owned and listened to them over 23yrs, but these 1723 Tower THX and 1723 Center THX have won me over, and I’ve been demoing different speakers over the last 5 yrs from manufacturers that include Revel, Monitor Audio, Paradigm and KEF, needless to say I don’t own any of those speakers and I didn’t send these Arendal’s back in their 60 day trial period. Now that I’m 4 months invested as an Arendal owner, I’ve been listening to them sealed, and on Thanksgiving day I decided to pull the port plugs out and go full ported, WOW, I knew I was getting a wonderful, full soundstage, but now the fullness added a bit of a lower frequency, a deepness(is that a word?), if you will, and thus far three days in, fully ported has taken my listening enjoyment to another level. Just to add, I will be running Dirac Live again tomorrow just to be thorough.

So……..have you 1723 Tower/Center owners actually tried your front stage “sealed” for a longer time period and then switch to “ported” and experience the same listening experience I have?

Thomas,  I appreciate your kind words.  It’s quite easy to be enthusiastic when your product sounds great, looks great and has a high quality build.  Your customers are quite fortunate that the Arendal Sound team offers such wonderful speakers.

That is really great to hear Laurence! Thank you!

I actually tried the vented version of my 1723 Monitors after using them basically sealed for most of the time.
At first, I thought it sounded much fuller and with more pressure, and in certain songs it did. But then it became more clear that it was at the cost of punch and precision. So I switched back to the sealed mode.
But this is attributed to my room and not necessarily the speaker.

We absolutely encourage our customers to experiment with this and find what works best for them.

Thomas and Lukas………………………………………..so after three weeks of having experimented with the 3 open ports and then 2 open ports, this past weekend I went back to sealed with a crossover set to 60Hz.  I’ve been having music listening sessions after work to wind down after long days and I have to agree, I have been missing what you call the precision and punch.  While I enjoyed the deepness that the open ports provided, the precision is missing and this is very much so important when listening to music.  This is why this “hobby” is so fulfilling, thus the journey in experimenting to find what sounds best to me.  Right now I’m listening to “Tears For Fears:  Songs From The Big Chair(blu-ray audio disc), and these multi-channel tracks are absolutely articulate and crisp coming from my 1723’s.

Oh, I will need to get that Blu-Ray.
Yeah, I am a big fan of sealed designs, they have something special, that vented designs just don’t have.
With a subwoofer, this gives me the best overall full-range sound.

Hi Lukas and Arendalers, could you give some examples of songs best to test out the sealed vs ported option with? I have always set my speakers ported but now with my new subwoofer 1723 1V in place I’d like to experiment a bit.

Did a little experiment yesterday and I found sealing the ports provided less base. My understanding is, the more your woofers move the more base and sealing restricts movement . At least in my configuration, other peoples configurations might vary. A few songs I used were; Love Brand New by Bob Moses & Forget You In LA by Poema, or basically any hip-hop song.

Sealing the ports will indeed reduce the low bass output but apparently provide a faster and tighter bass response.

For music I find that setting all speakers full range gives me the fullest sound even though I recently installed the 1723 1V sub which would be best suited for bass output. I’ll best keep on tweaking going back and forth to try out different ported/sealed combinations with different cross overs. The quest continues…will it ever stop? 😁

Laurence have just the 1723 towers listening to music.  Tried plugging one of the 3 ports as noted on some online reviews and then opened up all 3 ports.  Hear better, deeper bass with all the ports open in my listening room with no booming or muddy sound.  Remastered Pink Floyd, Rush and Yes CDs sound amazing with the drums and bass sound just right.  I’m done experimenting for now.  It’s ports open for me!  The journey continues!
