Subwoofer Tuning Frequency & High Pass Filters

Hi Arendal,

I have a MiniDSP EQ module connected inline to my current subwoofer and I came across a recommendation that a High Pass Filter (HPF) be configured to drop off any frequencies below the subwoofer’s “tuning frequency” for best performance and to protect the driver. Would you be able to share what this tuning frequency is for Arendal’s vented subwoofers, particularly the 1723 1V? Also, do these subwoofers have built-in HPFs already which would make this step unnecessary? I know there is an optional subsonic filter but I mean an HPF that is “hard wired” by default.

Hi Chris,

Nothing to worry about regarding the drivers on these, we have built-in protection filters that will limit the excursion in the ultra-low frequencies to protect the driver. So basically, you can use and abuse the subwoofer as much as you like and it will remain faithful without any ill-effects to the subwoofer.

There is, however, a built-in HPF at 10Hz. That is purely to protect the PSU of the amplifier though, and not the driver itself.

Thanks Thomas, that’s good to know! Still, I am curious to what the actual port tuning frequency is as it comes up in other contexts in EQ’ing, unless that’s a closely guarded secret. :D

Oh by no means, the port tuning for the 1723 Subwoofer 1V is around the 17Hz area.
