Arendal Subs vs SVS Subs

Does anyone have any experience as to whether the Arendal subs are better than the SVS subs as far as definition, distortion, tightness, etc.  Power output is not a concern as I don’t crank the volume way up. Just wandering if I would gain much with an Arendal sub. The SVS was a huge improvement over my Velodyne sub just as the Arendal Monitors were a huge improvement over my Magnat (not imported in the USA anymore) speakers. I’m a sealed sub person and currently using the SVS SB13 Ultra. I am happy with it.

The room is 14.5 feet wide. The AV cabinet is 67 inches wide, each sun is 20 inches wide with them less than an inch between it and the AV cabinet. Those Klipsch at just under 10 inches wide, but are about 2 inches (cabinet edges) from the sub, I have about 16-18 inches from the back corner of each front speaker to the side wall. Thus I like front firing ported or sealed subs. I actually love my PSA V1800s and had them 7 years. The issue is they are too big (not necessarily size wise, but would not mind a step down) as I need to run 12db attenuator in line to eqxh otherwise Audyssey complains they are too loud even on its lowest volume.  I would like to eventually move to a a pair of subs in the 13-15 inch range.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for letting me know! Yes, I have two models in my mind for this setup. The 1723 Sub1S (only appr 14 inches wide) and the 1723 Sub2S (16,5 inch wide)

The 1723 Sub2S has dual 13,8-inch drivers (one on each side) and there will be enough space to avoid blocking the drivers.

Of course, the PSA has more output if we are talking SPL, but for normal listening levels, both the 1723 Sub1S and the 1723 Sub2S will cover this with ease!

I recommend to give it a try, remember we have the 60-day audition period for the USA. Here is more: https://arendalsound.com/community/why/#customer_commitments

I had the chance to test the 1723 2s vs svs SB16-Ultra.

The arendal plays with more finesse and doesn’t sound as heavy handed on the low end as the SB16-Ultra did. The arendal sounded more transient/ quicker. Perfect for my mainly music needs.

Wish I could get into a side firing sub, just not my thing. And I can’t be the only one where side firing would be an issue or concern.

Hi Keith

Glad to meet you. I am wondering about the side firing subs myself. I have a room that’s about 11×20, speakers on the side wall. I’m wondering what I would gain over my SVS sub, or if it would be too much for my room. Too much base can be fatiguing as well. My ears literally start to hurt with too much bass. My SVS is dialed in perfectly. It was a relatively easy decision with my main speakers but not so much with my sub.  Arendal makes great speakers, that I am confident in. Maybe I worry too much. Hard for me to believe the sub would be as dramatic change as the main speakers were. Arendal, please say what you think. Is the sub as big if a difference as the main speakers?

For me I love my V1800s and would not replace them other than they are too big for the room (partially physically, mostly sonically). They are the last thing I plan to upgrade over the next 2 years as they sound great. The biggest advantage to me is they get to the  SPL I need them to effortlessly becasue they are over sized. If your SVS sounds great and does everything you want it to then I would not get rid of it. My PSA has great attack and deep clean bass and does what I want, so if I never replace it I would not be upset, more practical desire not a sonic upgrade.

Hi Keith

We’re you talking about Velodynes?

No my V1800 is a Powersound Audio, amazing sub.

I personally have 2 PB16 Ultras and you can make them sealed or ported which makes them versatile, but I can’t say if they are better because I never had Arendals subs

Thanks for that comparison I have the sb 16 ultra as well with 1723 monitors & center & was thinking about the 17232s or the 2v I mainly watch movies & play video games music just a little.
