Current movies with great sound

Hey guys,

I kind of feel there are not so many new movies released with better than average sound.
Most of them are okay but lack, especially dynamics.
They sound like they were mastered for your TV and soundbar and not for a great home-cinema experience.
Basically all Marvel/Disney movies fall into that category.

What current releases stood out to you?

My last two were:

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2021
A nice and mellow family film with great sound design. A typical Sunday afternoon movie.

Last Night in Soho 2021
A very dynamic soundtrack, sometimes even too dynamic. Nothing for people living in apartments:)
The movie was okay, nothing extraordinary.

Looking forward to your experiences.

As to movies with great sound it is a pity that Disney Studios/Marvel do not explore the possibilities of the new 3D sound for Home Theater. Mostly these movies are below reference level you have to turn up the level 6 db.

Sony Studios atmos productions are excellent not only for current productions but also for former masterpieces such as Lawrence of Arabia a time where there were no surround sound. They have even reproduced The Guns of Navarone (1961) in 4 K atmos. A completely new experience compared to the former bluray editions who had little 3D sound experience.

Hi Folks!

This movie has an impressive bass throughout the entire movie. Well recommended!

I think I find it more thrilling when effects or dynamics occur when they are completely unexpected.  For instance, the new intro to Season 4 of Servant has some surprisingly good effects… its an intro, something that is usually skipped, so no one expects anything other than a memorable theme… aka Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Sopranos, or other iconic theme song / music…. but this intro has decent effects:

We watched Servant Season 4 Episode 3 last night and the Séance scene, was wickedly good as the vocals where in sync with the camera angle as it panned around the room.  Completely unexpected.  I guess I rather be surprised and later discuss how the effects sounded and immersed you into a scene, than simply expecting a booming soundtrack from a blockbuster movie and being left wanting more.

Master and commander the far side of the world has a wonderful 5.1 mix.

Its an older movie but it was the benchmark from 5.1 setups.

Waves, footsteps, bells en other sounds from a wooden ship are very realistic.

And when they start shooting its insane.

Its a masterpiece on blu ray, story, sound and picture.

@Jurgen

Definitely demo material. I used it too much in the past so it is off my demo list:)

@Luis

Started watching Servant and they have actually pretty good and dynamic sounds in some of the scenes.
Curious how the series will progress.

I recently rewatched A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part 2… kudos to John Krasinski as I really liked the way he used silence and eerie effects to build suspense and then brutally attacks your senses with explosive dynamic effects… I think both movies were very well done.  I think this scene is a great example of the dynamic swings…

@Lukas hope you like the series… it’s a little creepy, but I think it’s very enjoyable.
