Position Atmos

Well, to complete my equipment with Arendal, I have ordered 2 pairs of bookshelfs to use as Atmos, embedding them in the false ceiling.

I have a positioning question, my room is a bit narrow at 3.5m and I don’t know whether to orient them to the listening position.

Or leave them parallel to the walls, as you advise me or as you have?

Fernando, thanks for the links and your comments, I will take them into account. My room is very acoustically treated and easily supports more than 90dbs without affecting the tone, I have exceeded 100dbs measuring with a sound level meter and it does not bother the ear, this room swallows it all XD. It is true that the Rotel behaves well for its age, anyway if I can in the future I will change it.

I know you your room and is a really nice one, with outstanding attention to the acoustics. I would love to see some REW measurements, specially RT60s or waterfall plots :)

Said that, in terms of the matter into question the picture does not tell me much, is that peak SPL? average? coming from a single speaker? all speakers at once? across the whole frequency range?

Different people have different sensitivity to loud sounds, in my case I am not confortable watching a 2h movie at an average SPL  >75dB. Still, we all can tolerate peaks of >100dB without major issues. For your own good I hope that is peak level and not sustain SPL over long periods.

Besides, I am not sure those Atmos speakers can go that high in volume (tweeter limitations?) regarding of the wattage you feed them with. On top of that that amplifier can go higher than 60W for short moments (peaks) and make the speakers even louder.

If those are not good enough arguments for not needing more juice here is some food for thought: is there any Atmos mix reaching  >100+db peaks on every individual top speaker?

But hey, if you feel you want more juice for them I would go digital with some Hypex or purifi modules. I owned two different ATI implementations and did not like them.  Check this French site

Fernando, the SPL of that image was maximum when watching a movie, the ATMOS were not yet in place, it is true that it is too loud and I don’t usually watch movies like that, although it is not annoying. It is true that these 1961 series speakers will not reach the SPL of the 1723 but they do not have as much constant information as the rest and will withstand peaks well. I thought about the Hypex modules and I precisely looked at them on that page since I am from Spain and I can buy without problems, in fact I bought the ATI in a store in France. I love ATI and I haven’t tried any Hypex amplification, which made me hesitate. Are you perhaps also from Europe? I say it because of the name and the information you have given me jjjjj

Exactly my point! I can go that loud with my 1961 bed layer fed with my x3600h but that SPL is probably coming from my subs, most likely around 60hz. Still, my bed layer can get pretty loud with the optimistic 62W 8ohms all channels driven of my receiver (660*0.65/7). It is just I don’t think it will be able to sustain reference levels for long without clipping…but who listen to reference levels anyway?

I am not trying to be a killjoy here but I will use the money for acquiring another matching Arendal sub and put them in opposite corners. Your room deserves it …well that and you using REW ..and maybe a miniDSP? I would even consider selling the Rotel and use the Anthem to power the Tops. Food for thought

Yes, Hypex and specially purify are very well regarded among the Hifi enthusiacst and it will be my choice when I go Atmos in the future …which seems to be soon since Arendal is forcing my hand discontinuing the 1961 series ;)

I am from Spain but I live in Norway since a while back … and for the foreseeable future. I lived in many different countries and being in the hobby for 30 plus years gave the opportunity of trying a lot of gear and meet a lot of people in the community. All helps to keep me very updated about online shopping  and such…

BTW, I swear I saw your reply in Spanish…and right before my eyes turned into English?????

Fernando, the Anthem is a processor with which. or amplifies and I need the stages. I don’t use REW and I don’t like automatic calibrations, I use a sound level meter to adjust phase and delay, it seems strange but I get very good results, many fans have been through my room and can confirm it 😄

He didn’t rule out one day trying a Minidsp, although the Anthem does it on its own, but I don’t like the results.

It is true that you saw it in Spanish, I sent it without translating and then corrected it, the translations may not be entirely correct.

My bad, I assumed the Anthem had built in amp.

I have not doubt your room sounds phenomenal. Said that, unless your SPL meter has a built in spectrum analyser (which I doubt) you won’t even touch what you can accomplish with REW and a calibrated mic. REW is the best thing that happened to HT since the subwoofer invention  XD

Not everybody needs or wants a miniDSP but you never know unless you use REW

But I get it, REW is a rabbit hole not everybody want to go into …

I know that REW is a powerful tool, many friends use it, but be careful that you have to know how to use it well and interpret the information well. As you have said, I don’t want to go into that hole, before having this room I had another one that was untreated and I had a lot of frustrations because I knew it didn’t sound good, that’s why I paid a professional to calculate the room and the treatment. REW is like going to the doctor every day, something will always tell you what’s wrong. 😄
