To buy fancy cables or not?
We have all read about the “benefits” of using fancy HDMI cables – improved picture quality, more clear audio, etc. But, is it realistic to expect an upgrade in our home theater experience by purchasing a fancy cable? Plain and simple, the answer is no. HDMI cables are digital cables – either they work or they don’t. There are generally no significant differences in the performance between expensive and affordable HDMI cables. I know what you’re thinking: you just got a very high-end 4K TV, and don’t want to use cheap cables to your sources. That is valid, but understand that it comes with little benefit. As long as the cable meets the required specs for whatever source you’re using (Example: HDMI 2.1 for a gaming system), any reasonably priced HDMI cable will work just fine. Yes, higher-priced HDMI cables may come with a better build quality, which could ensure proper usage over a longer period. Outside of a durability standpoint, searching for high-end HDMI cables can become a slippery slope and rob you of the extra money you could spend on room treatment, additional speakers and many other things.
The bottom line is this: either the cable works or it doesn’t. Since its a digital cable, there is no middle ground.
