Ultra Low Frequency
When we watch movies, we all want that room-shaking bass. We search for scenes with the lowest and deepest bass response because…. it’s fun.
In the context of movies, ultra-low frequencies (ULF) are often used to enhance the audio experience by adding those deep and powerful bass tones. ULF frequencies are typically below 20 Hz, which is below our range of hearing. Though we don’t hear them, we certainly feel them! These low-frequency sounds can help create suspense and immersion in action scenes – particularly in action and horror movies. ULF effects are used in movie soundtracks frequently and are emphasized through the use of the subwoofers. If you’re looking for a dynamic and impactful cinematic experience, seek out those movies with deep bass notes!
There are many databases online that list some of the go-to demos, but make sure to check out the openings of Edge of Tomorrow and Blade Runner 2049, as well as several scenes in Ready Player One!
